Living in Fear

From a teaser for the Phil Donohue show:

Tuesday: Living in Fear

Tonight on Donahue: Sniper Attacks — With schools closed, regular road blocks, and an area paralyzed in terror, experts talk about how to cope with living in fear.

As for me, I refuse to do it. Sniper attacks such as these and other random acts of violence are one of life’s unexpected events that you simply cannot plan for. What are you going to do if you live in the “Tri-State” area? Stay home? Don’t venture out of your house for any reason? You have to continue life normally. Of course, I’m not suggesting that you haunt the well-lit gas stations near convenient on/off ramps of major interstate highways in the dead of night. This is asking for trouble. Use some common sense. But fear? Fear means the asshole has won, even if he never hit you personally with a bullet.

And of course, all of this is very easy for me to say. I don’t live anywhere remotely near where these sniper attacks are occurring. But that doesn’t mean my urban area won’t be next or that a copy cat won’t be born from all the media hype. But if you want to find me, I’ll be here, business as usual, altering my routine for no one.
